How to Ask for a Raise
Asking for a raise can be an intimidating and tricky conversation. However, with some preparation and a plan, you can increase the likelihood that the conversation goes in your favor. Here are some do’s and don’ts to have in mind when entering into a salary negotiation.
Things Not to Say When Asking For a Raise
I just bought a house
I’m going to be a father
I just got a new car
My rent went up
I’m the one who tells you everything that’s going on around here
These are all things that have no positive impact whatsoever on the company, so the employer will not view these as good arguments for an increase of any kind.
I know that my colleague makes $5K more annually than me
I’ve been on time every day since you told me to stop coming in late
My clients love me!
I will leave if you don’t give me this raise.
I’ve been here a long time.
I have a better offer from another employer.
I will take colleagues with me if I leave.
These things don’t provide the company with any benefit and some of them can even be perceived as threats. The points made on this list are not likely to inspire your boss to give you a salary increase.
Things To Say When Asking For a Raise
Thank you for taking time to meet with me.
Over the past 12 months, I’ve done [X, Y, and Z] and this has directly benefitted the company by [X, Y, and Z payoffs for the company].
I’ve also taken on [special project] and [result of special project]
I regularly mentor new employees and am always available to answer their questions
These statements all provide a benefit to the organization. Remember to do your homework and ensure your stats are correct.
Strategy to Use When Negotiating Salary
When asking for an increase to your salary, the discussion needs to focus strictly on the value you bring to the company as opposed to anything happening in your personal life. Think about it this way – if you were hiring someone to put a new roof on your house, who would you pay more for? Someone who’s certified in the latest technology, fully insured, and has years of experience or someone who has completed a few roofing jobs but is thinking of getting a new car so they need the money.
Finally, have a number in mind and state this when you give you best reason or two. “Because of the strong performance and benefits I bring to the organization, I respectfully request a $6,000 salary increase.” They will do one of three things — 1) say yes; 2) say no; or 3) say not at this time but they’ll discuss it with you at a future point in time. Be respectful but do ask for a date and bring it up in a professional manner at that time.
