How to Safeguard Yourself in Divided Political Times
Today’s political arena is one that’s divided in many areas. While the majority of people keep their actions in check and work toward the good of society, there are some who take a more hardened stance and sometimes get involved in conflict. Here are a few tips on how to maintain a neutral, low-key public profile.
Don’t leave party affiliation clues out in the open. For example, before you put your car in the shop, make sure the radio station isn’t on NPR or Fox News.
Invest in an Umbrella Insurance Policy. This provides a large financial buffer in the event you get sued by someone. A simple car accident payout can exceed your policy’s limits and you’re on the hook for the rest of the settlement. With an umbrella policy, you have coverage above and beyond your regular insurance.
Political party affiliation is public record. Consider changing yours to No Party Affiliation (NPA). Before you do this, however, be certain to research the impact it may have in terms of voting in a primary election in your state.
Avoid public political conflict. With any situation where people hold a hard stance against one another, it’s wise to stay clear and don’t join in the fray. It’s impossible to predict how people will behave so take the safe road whenever possible.
Maintain a low profile on social media discussions surrounding controversial subject matter. Any engagement (comments, likes/dislikes) shows your stance in a very public arena.
Keep your work communications centered around work and steer clear of politics. Your job is not an ideal arena to discuss heated topics because it can be a distration.
It goes without saying that as Americans, we’re free to express your opinion, likes and dislikes anytime you wish. However, there are situations in which you may want to play your cards close to the vest.
